Update/Fall sports

Hey guys!
Were about 2 weeks away from preseason and that means it is fun time once again. In my case that means throwing myself in front of a ball the size of my head in the hopes that it stays out of the net...yeah. The craziness (and maybe insanity) comes from my dad. But it also means that I will be kicking this blog off again. I will be updating the pages so that it is for all the fall sports, and once school starts I will talk to the coaches about if they want any stats kept. I will keep schedules and scores and standings updated for everyone, and running stats for those who want it. You want anything in particular, feel free to hit me up at my school email.

Baseball out early for second straight year, looses 1-0 in Extra innings to G/NG

Gonna be honest, I am still trying to swallow the fact that we are out. And this is less of a game post, and more of a season wrap up. We had so much talent. But it happens. You don't get the bounces or a call goes against you. Anything can happen in sports. It's part of what we love (and hate) about them. This was such a great year, and we fought so hard for everything. Even at our worst, we could play with some of the best. We were a fairly young team. Let's turn around, remember this, use the experience, and when next year comes, come out firing. Thanks for a great season this year.

Spring season coming to a close

I guess that title is off a little. The spring regular season is wrapping up with standings going final. So let's go through and see what this spring had in store for our Falcon teams:

Baseball: After a rough stretch happened both early in the year, and in the middle, they found ways to whether the storm, showing heart and resilience to make sure they broke even at .500 (8-8), securing a home playoff game in the preliminary stages. This team found ways to win, even when the bats were not quite full of luck, lead in the pitching core by junior Jack Davenport and senior Pete Lamagna, and a defensive set of players that was constantly changing through the season. Seriously, the starting catcher at the beginning of the year was playing left field by the end of the year.

Softball: Rough year on the diamond for the softball team. Injuries plagued the team through the season and the loss of players at grade checks strained a already depth worn team. They made contact with the ball but couldn't consistently find the holes needed to get on base, while defensively they struggled with errors and bad luck. Pitching wise they had a variety of pitchers, as they tried to find a way to make something out of the season, but only mustered a .125 win percentage. (2-14)

Girls Lacrosse: I hope you didn't blink, because otherwise you might of missed it. To quote Jack Edwards this team showed "hearts of lions" after loosing their first four games. This team mustered a 6-game win streak, including knocking off Morse, who is riding the top seed into the playoffs. Coming out of the regular season as the fourth seed in the Class B East side of things, with a winning percentage of .500 (6-6), I will say that there are some things that concerns me with this team. The defense seems somewhat inconsistent, and has had moments this year where the inexperience in the defensive core seemed to be exploited. The defensive core of this team is made up of one junior, four sophomores and a couple of freshman, if that helps explain my point. This is a young set of backs, and they have struggled at times this year. Six of the twelve games they allowed more than twelve goals. Combine that with the fact that more than half of the goals scored came from three players, and I am left with some concern. It leaves me thinking about whether there is enough depth in this team to weather an injury happening, or enough experience to handle the level of play in the playoffs. This team has already showed they can make things happen though. If they get a bounce or two, they have shown that they can hold their own against some of the best in the class.

Boys Lacrosse: They snuck in. It was a rather wild, up and down sort of year. No win streaks more than two. No loosing streaks more than one game at a time. Offensive numbers and defensive totals fluctuated pretty drastically throughout the season. Grabbing win percentage of .500 on the year (6-6) is good, and will allow them to play on, but it is hard to say much more just looking at the little gameplay I say and the scores. I will say that if the scores don't lie, they will need to be a lot more consistent if they want to make a run of things.

Baseball drops close one to Kennebunk

Kennebunk came out of the gate firing on all cylinders, cruising by on defense, and then stringing up a few hit to take a 3-0 at the end of the first inning. Freeport would battle back, picking up a run before tying the game at 3 in the fifth. Kennebunk responded with 2 more of their own in the bottom of the fifth and got to the 7th fairly smoothly. But it looked as though trouble would arise when Max Doughty got a single and tacked on an extra base due to an errant throw by the third baseman, and Jack Davenport hit a double to send Max in and cut the lead to 1. But it was not to be. Even with the bases loaded and 1 out, Freeport couldn't find that fifth run to tie the game for the second time, and it ended 5-4. Freeport now turns their attention to Lake Region, home on Wednesday

Freeport Girls lacrosse, after dropping the first four games of the year, have strung two wins in a row, against Wells and Gardiner and are holding a playoff spot for the first time this year. (Gonna be honest, writing this without seeing the games is somewhat hard. That and I am in a class. Shhhhhh ;)

Anyways, Freeport has had leading goal scorers in Senior Midfielder Emily Johnson and Junior Attack/Mid Courtney Broderick with 7 goals a piece. Emily has also leads with 3 assists and 23 ground balls and 16 draw controls. Backing the team has been junior netminder Sam Jordan who has a .406 save percentage and a 11.4 GAA.

I am going to try and figure out how I want to do the updates on lacrosse, so I leave you with this. Freeport will be playing at home on Tuesday (tomorrow), 4pm against Morse (currently 2nd place at 4-2). Be loud, be proud, and go Falcons!

Baseball Update

After starting off strong against Well, Freeport struggled to put something together, loosing the next four. Now, just 8 games into the year, with a 4-4 record, and Freeport is looking to build off of their last three games, where they have brought themselves back to .500 on the year, with three straight wins. Going into their matchup at Greely (7-2, 2nd in class B west), Freeport has shown has shown some resiliency, fighting in every game they have played, no matter how rough the start. They have found ways to battle and be in every game and challenge anyone they faced. If you put a better start into the game against Yarmouth, or Falmouth, or any of the four losses, and had the team settle down and play their game right from the start, we could be at an entirely different standings. Now they once again test themselves in the road against high level competition. Freeport @ Greely starts off at 5pm, on Friday, May 15th. Hope to see you there, and go Falcons!

Midseason update

Hey guys,
So we are hitting the middle of what seems to be a ok season for Freeport athletics. The schedules and results are updated with what I have. The actual running stats still need to be updated. Just to explain what is going on.

- Baseball and Girls Lacrosse I have the rosters and the stats. I need to enter and update the numbers, and will get to that probably tomorrow night. I apologize for the delay. I have been busy as Model UN just happened.

- Softball has the roster entered but I have not been receiving stats from them so as it stands right now it will just be the roster

- I have not received anything from Boys lacrosse. If anyone has something they want to send me for a roster, then feel free and I will enter it.
